Kondisi politik internasional yang sedang memanas di Kawasan Asia-Pasifik membuat Australia berada dalam posisi yang sulit. Amerika Serikat adalah sekutu lama Australia yang memegang peranan penting dalam kebijakan pertahanan dan keamanan Australia, sedangkan China adalah pemain baru yang memegang peranan penting dalam perekonomian Australia. Di posisi yang sulit ini, banyak yang berpendapat bahwa pada akhirnya Australia harus memilih salah satu di antara keduanya. Namun faktanya, Australia tidak harus memilih. Penerapan strategi hedging seperti yang sudah dilakukan di bawah Pemerintahan Perdana Menteri John Howard sangat mungkin di aplikasikan ulang saat ini. Dengan adanya kompetisi antara dua negara besar justru merupakan kesempatan yang sangat baik bagi Australia untuk menunjukkan kapasitasnya sebagai negara middle power untuk bisa menyatukan kepentingan kedua negara tersebut.
